I am a writer of literary fiction. I've been writing stories since I was a child - starting with the adventures of my red fluffy mouse and moving on to sci-fi adventure. After reading Scott Fitzgerald as a teenager, I shifted again into literary fiction.

Poorly!

I do have some tricks that work for me:

Reading certain books/authors that invigorate and inspire me; e.g. James Joyce, Italo Calvino's "If on a winter's night a traveller", "The Laugh of the Medusa" by Hélène Cixous. This line by Georges Bataille often works: “How can we linger over books to which their authors have manifestly not been driven?”

Reading short punchy novellas, just to show that writing can be light and simple. Reading anything, just to reset your head and remind yourself of the beauty and power of writing (independent of the burden you've submitted to).

Writing something different. Maybe something throwaway and entirely disposal. (You may even keep it, if it turns out well, but that's not the goal.)

I'm quite analytical in how I think about writing. So: writing about my writing - the plot, structure, characters, digging into them, analysing them - reconnecting to them, basically.

Exercise, especially going for a run.

Writing in the second-person, addressing everything to "you". This worked particularly well in Nanowrimo.

In fact, doing Nanowrimo in general. I find the external obligation to write, the pace, and also my wonderful word-count spreadsheet, keep me writing.(less)

Write. Whatever interests you, whatever gets you putting words on a page. Remember that an aspiring writer is still a writer.

Read. Read often and widely. Yes, most of the stuff you read will seem better, more accomplished than anything you could write. But (a) it's probably not and (b) it got that way from lots of feedback and polishing.

If you write to be read, remember to actually finish. Never shy away from closure.

And when you have something to share with the world, go out and share it. People won't magically find you in this overwhelming sea. Get out there, own who you are (here, Amazon, social media, etc.).(less)

Vladimir Nabokov
“Toska - noun /ˈtō-skə/ - Russian word roughly translated as sadness, melancholia, lugubriousness.

"No single word in English renders all the shades of toska. At its deepest and most painful, it is a sensation of great spiritual anguish, often without any specific cause. At less morbid levels it is a dull ache of the soul, a longing with nothing to long for, a sick pining, a vague restlessness, mental throes, yearning. In particular cases it may be the desire for somebody of something specific, nostalgia, love-sickness. At the lowest level it grades into ennui, boredom.”
