Haley Newlin is 45% done with The Conjuring of America: When the U.S. occupied Haiti, soldiers were ordered to take voodoo dolls and other spiritual relics. They reported these spiritual practices as “savage” making incredibly false claims of cannibalism and raising the dead (aka zombies), and then upheld these fears as the reason why Jim Crow and the occupation of Haiti was essential. “The screams and the crows stopped. The woods fell silent. No wind, no rustling leaves, nothing. I clapped my hands in front of my face. Nothing. I brought my hand to my ear and snapped. Nothing. It was like the woods were me off one piece at a time--first my bravery, then my sanity, and now my senses.”
