Steven Luna likes making things up on a daily basis. This biography, though factual, is one of those things. He's the author of the absurdly humorous Joe Vampire series for grown-ups, the heart-wrenchingly serious Songs from the Phenomenal Nothing for almost-grown-ups, and the magical realism tale Starfire and the Miracle Tree for readers of all ages. Simeon Croom and the Treasure Star, his new comedy-adventure series, is now available. ...more

It's springboard from which a profile emerges, and the story suggests itself from there. If I'm ever at a loss for ideas and just can't get inspired, I'll dream up a new character and drop him or her in a dodgy situation, just to see what they'll do. Then, we're off and running, and duly inspired.(less)

Letting the Ideas Fly

Writing isn’t as easy as it looks in the movies, where people just sit down and cry into their laptops and finish a screenplay in a two-minute montage. In real life, it’s choppier, and with a much longer soundtrack. The crying part isn’t entirely wrong, though. Writers know how uneven the inspiration can be: sometimes the ideas come quickly full and complete, and sometimes they come slowly, sluggi

“I dreamed once after he died that Lord Goodsleep came to me in the night on a stallion made of storm clouds,” she admitted. “He was monstrously large, with a pair of shining golden scissors in his hand, and he approached me while I slept and snipped me wide open from my neck to my navel, as if my skin were made of muslin. Then he took a pair of iron tongs and lifted out my heart—it was a crystalline globe, just a lovely thing, really, throwing dazzling sparks all over the sky like a magic lamp.” Fergal’s eyes lit. “How wonderful.” “He rolled it around in his fingers as if he were inspecting a plum… then he laid it on an anvil and smashed it with a silver hammer—not enough to turn it to dust, just enough to leave jagged edges upon it all the way around. Then he pushed it back inside of me with no concern whatsoever for my anguish, and he stitched me up tightly, so that when I woke, I would possess a pain that could never be dissolved.”

“Sometimes, when we lose ourselves in fear and despair, in routine and constancy, in hopelessness and tragedy, we can thank God for Bavarian sugar cookies. And, fortunately, when there aren't any cookies, we can still find reassurance in a familiar hand on our skin, or a kind and loving gesture, or subtle encouragement, or a loving embrace, or an offer of comfort, not to mention hospital gurneys and nose plugs, an uneaten Danish, soft-spoken secrets, and Fender Stratocasters, and maybe the occasional piece of fiction. And we must remember that all these things, the nuances, the anomalies, the subtleties, which we assume only accessorize our days, are effective for a much larger and nobler cause. They are here to save our lives. I know the idea seems strange, but I also know that it just so happens to be true.”
Zach Helm, Stranger Than Fiction: The Shooting Script
