Biography
Pam Kesterson lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband of 36 years. Pam's bachelor degrees in business and marketing have assisted her working life spent in sales and marketing.

She has been rearranging syntax since age 16 when her first poem published. When she's not writing fiction or poetry she's working or can be found doing a variety of activities from yoga to distance running, or simply enjoying a nice glass of wine with family and friends.

Pam has a passion for healthy gourmet cooking with a love of strong coffee and super hot foods. She also enters spicy food contests whenever she has a chance.

Should Helen put her freedom at risk, not to mention her sanity a The novel gripped my heart and soul from the opening pages and begged to answer the question of, should someone seek revenge themselves or let the authorities know their circumstances? Should Helen put her freedom at risk, not to mention her sanity and any hope of being a reformed citizen and trusting the laws in place to help her? Or furthest from her mind, would be to channel all that anger to help others in need, so they wouldn't have to go through the hell that she had experienced.

We're all touched by someone in our lives who has taken similar paths of despair. I'm sure everyone involved in prostitution and heroin addition has a compelling story about what caused them to go off the deep end in life. The author, Sharon Brownlie, allows the reader to see through the tough facade that Helen has, and see her hidden tenderness that only comes out a couple of times. Other characters, like Toofy, are brave and caring, putting his life in danger as a token of love for Helen that she does not return. He also has an enormous heart to help others, even if he goes about showing his affections in desperate ways.

But the book is not judgmental of the prostitutes and drug addicts that live under the scrutiny and restrictions of the local police. The author describes the scenery perfectly as we experience the need for survival and the adjustments required that surround such a sad life. Even unexpected moments of courage come through at times. The necessary crass language in the dialogue makes this a great and satisfying read. And it ends up being a page turner to find out what Helen will do next or what will happen to her, not to mention the well-deserving victims in her path.

I can't wait to read her next book to see how Helen can get herself out of this mess and reunite with sanity, unless of course, she can't. It was good to get an inside glimpse of such futility and what causes the pulling downward spiral. Helen is the kind of in-depth character that you love to root for and hope her ways don't rub off on you. I feel as if I've known her and walked in her shoes. I highly recommend this book as an emotional and eye-opening read. ...more "
