Self-Analysis

Originally published the 1940s, this is one of the founding texts in the self-analysis movement. It still has much practical advice to offer to today's audience. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Hesperides Press are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork. Karen Horney was a German psychoanalyst. Her theories questioned some traditional Freudian views, particularly his theory of sexuality, as well as the instinct orientation of psychoanalysis and its genetic psychology. As such, she is often classified as Neo-Freudian.

I read this for a school paper but was astonished to find that it still so relevant. I had just read a book by Debbie Ford in which she advocates finding the ego structures we make during childhood and eliminate them. This book of self-analysis described just how to do that but with much more insight and guidance.

This is a very useful book, I am surprised that it was written so long ago and that it has received so little attention. As a person coping with a severely abusive childhood and complex ptsd as a result of service in Indochina, like so many others I struggled with life for an amazing 30 years before crashing and burning. I found myself in the hands of the so called mental health professionals. As it was I was lucky, I landed in a place where there were people on staff who actually favored this reliance on self directed analysis with judicious assistance from professional help as needed. This flies in the face of the standard approach taken by so many which assumes as Frued promoted, that there is an absolute necessity for a professional to carry out the "healing'. The underlying assumptions derive in my view from the Judeo Christian view of the individual as being fatally flawed and totally reliant on outside intervention for "redemption" or "salvation." This is the basis for the western cultural model behind the practice of medicine. people expect the "cure" to be handed to them by some power greater than they, i.e. the doctor. The same attitude has permeated the mental health profession, much to the detriment of many. After an initial exposure to the approach Horney outlines here, I was ultimately co opted by the standard practitioner's the more enlightened institution that had been my first port of call went under and was subsumed, not unexpectedly by a conglomerate health provider. I became like so many the benighted recipient of the philosophy that I was fundamentally and irrevocably damaged and all that could be expected was management by "the professionals" with the judicious use of drugs. Bastards nearly killed me. I was lucky to drift into Buddhist practice which bares many similarities to the process of self analysis outlined here and to the first approach to my difficulties to which I was exposed. It made sense to me and I was on familiar ground. Over the last 8 years I have been engaged with that practice as a lynchpin in precisely the process Horney outlines here and everything she puts forward rings true in the light of my own experience. Thankfully there has been for me a great unfolding in this journey. I have little faith in the efforts of the so called professionals and on my yearly trips back to an institution dealing with many combat veteran's for physical checkups I see the results of the perceived wisdom applied. it keeps these poor souls trapped and helpless, totally reliant on the "expertise" of people following a flawed philosophy that has been proven nigh on useless. But then there are now substantial financial interest in Australia to whose benefit it falls to keep the suffering, suffering!

Awesome book written in the 1940's. I live my life free associating, that was kind of funny - apparently some people fear that LOL.

Psychoanalysis is a theory developed by Sigmund Freud that aims to cure neuroses, i.e psychological disturbances that have no organic basis, e.g., phobias, depression, addictions or functional stomach upsets. These disturbances spring from unconscious strivings developed in order to cope with life despite fears, isolation, etc.

Karen Horney believed - contrary to Freud - that it is possible to perform a psychoanalysis by the patient himself alone. Therefore, she wrote this book as a manual for layman patients so that they could get rid of their neurotic symptoms as well as make them free for the development of their best potentialities.

Book summary

Neurotic trends (NT) are unconscious urges that develop early in life (combination of temperament and environment). They give the person feeling that he must stuck to the established path at all odds. They must not be confused with character traits however: for instance, neurotic perfection differs from just “being more orderly” in the fact that the former is pursued compulsively (with disregard for self-interest) and the sufferer gets frustrated when these compulsive pursuits are ineffective.

Course of analysis
For each NT (a person can have any number of NTs):
(1) Recognition of NT
(2) Discovery of its causes, manifestations and consequences
(3) Discovery of interrelations with other parts of the personality, especially with other neurotic trends

The actual analysis is a long-term process (can take years) consisting of two main techniques, namely: (A) regular free-association (FA) sessions, and (B) systematic analyses of FAs’ outputs as well as interpreting one’s dreams.

Over time first appear the least repressed NTs (so usually these are not the strongest with the greatest influence on personality). It also happens that the patient later discovers that some of these were not actual NTs but only symptoms of secondary defenses.

Free association
During FA, he expresses himself as completely and frankly as possible, i.e. without reserve he says all that comes to his mind regardless of whether it appears trivial, off the point, irrational, embarrassing, etc. He talks about his ideas, memories, thoughts about self and others, beliefs, wishes, fantasies…

- In self-analysis instead of talking to a psychologist the patient writes down notes or catchwords
- FA lacks directions (no reasoning allowed); it must be spontaneous
- It’s important to take notice when tempted to conceal something
-The goal is to enable to understand how the patient’s mind works, to reveal the structure of personality by recognizing factors that were unconscious

Analysis
- Attentive analysis of the notes taken during FA
- Goal lies in finding unconscious forces, they must not be selected prematurely however
- Look for details, e.g. if patient every session emphasizes his superior IQ, then it has paramount emotional value to him
- Look for repetitive themes, contradictions, exaggerations, reactions of shame
- Discover the points at which he turns from cooperation to defense, identify themes the patient omits or deserts quickly
- When we find an observation or gain an insight, it must be examined how that manifests in various areas, what consequences it has, which factors of personality account fo it

Example: A person is tongue-tied when he wants to participate in discussion because he is afraid of possible criticism. If he allows this observation to take root within himself, he will see that the fear is out of proportion to any real danger - he will wonder why the fear is so great that it prevents him from speaking and even thinking properly. He will try to find similar difficulties in other areas of his life and what forms they take. Basically he will perform steps (2) and (3) from the “Course of analysis” paragraph.

Resistances
Analysis invokes two groups of opposite forces - the interest of the one group is to maintain unchanged the illusions and safety afforded by the neurotic structure; the other is to get freedom and strength by overthrowing the neurotic structure.

Recognizing Resistance Forces (RF)
RFs are set in motion when patient’s security claims are jeopardized, illusions questioned, etc. Person suffering from RFs is like a person frightened by thunderstorms, who is not only terrified by thunders and lighting but even by a cloud on far horizon. The sources of resistances are the sum total of a person’s interests in maintaining the status quo. When we approach any domain that is tabu for the patient (repressed) he will react with anger or fear and set going defensive action. (Patient with strong defense mech. will react emotionally when anything is questioned).

- Resolving a blockage is number-one priority
- It helps to review notes that precede blockage to find the point of departure
- Try to associate to a resistance, i.e. consider the particular manifestation of the blockage and let thoughts run freely

Basic types of resistances
(1) Open fight against the provoking problem
(2) Defensive emotional reaction
(3) Defensive or evasive maneuvers (Evasive maneuvers in self-analysis may take various forms and may develop at any point, e.g. may prevent a person from starting to analyse a problem, may impair the value of his FA, invalidate findings… So he should be very wary about the times when he feels distressed/fatigued/irritated when he should do self-analysis)

Analysis of dreams
- Dreams are one of several important sources of information, they however don’t give a static picture of feelings of opinions but are primarily an expression of tendencies
- They may reveal our true feelings
- They are governed by wishful thinking, i.e., give voice to our strivings and often represent attempts at a solution of conflicts bothering us
- To understand a dream we must connect it with the actual provocation.

some more notes:
- Anxiety often appears when there are two conflicting feelings toward one subject, e.g. when we both resent someone and crave his admiration - then, it’s necessary to suppress one while acting with the objective of fulfilling the other
- In all neuroses self-confidence is impaired and fictitious notions of superiority substitute for it

I am a big fan of Karen Horney since I read one of her works two years ago. After that I spent lots of time to finish all the Chinese version of her works. Self-analysis is the first one in English of her works I have read. It is quite difficult , to be honest, but it is fun as well.

I found the title of this book to be misleading on two counts. Firstly, it does not discuss any specific procedure of how a person can conduct self-analysis - if it does, it is completely lost in the sheer amount of incoherent narration in this book. Secondly, it focuses way too much on a therapist-client relationship which which is a far cry from self-analysis.

This book looks tediously into the overt and covert characteristics of neuroticism. Intermittently, it discusses the challenges that therapists must face while dealing with neuroticism. In glimpses, it discusses why self-analysis is challenging. There are chapters titled 'occasional self-analysis,' 'systematic self-analysis' - disappointingly though, the narrative of these chapters wavers from discussion of therapy sessions to speculations by the author regarding what could have helped the client overcome his troubles better. Moreover, the discussions switch abruptly from one case to another. The case studies used to support the author's ideas are too lengthy to be focused on the point the author is trying to make through their use. Finally, there is a lot of psychoanalytic jargon that props up all over this book which is obviously not reader friendly. At best, it is vague and at worst, it makes you want to give up the anyway unnecessarily elongated read.

I assume that this book is directed for psychoanalysis enthusiasts; it is definitely not for the common reader. Therefore, I am giving it two stars - for someone with a psychoanalytic background this book offers a fair insight into the nature of neuroticism and the nature of resistance among clients. For someone who is attempting to understand psychoanalysis or neuroticism as a beginner though, I think there is a need to read a textbook explaining the fundamental ideas of psychoanalysis before attempting to understand this one.

I found out about Karen Horney's work a little before I started seeing a therapist as my natural inclination to come fully armed and informed instigated the search for psychoanalytical theories that may help answer questions about what to expect. I started reading Neurosis and Human Growth: The Struggle Towards Self-Realization but I never got to finish it, even though I initially found it interesting. I think, over time, I found it too tedious and clinical to keep my attention.

Fast forward to today, and I wish I tell my younger self to read Self-Analysis instead of the other book prior to starting therapy instead. Despite being published in the 1940s, it has been extremely illuminating, relevant & thought-provoking.

I'm starting to realize what my therapist actually expect out of me, and it's been extremely helpful to realize that I can do the analysis on my own. The book identifies the pros and cons of self-analysis, the contribution of both patient & analyst as well as the process you undergo when you do it. I've started to ask questions revolving around my actions and reactions, and have gotten considerably further in this junction than if I had allowed my therapist to subtly guide me into analyzing my behaviors in the first place.

I highly recommend this book.

Karen Horney did a great job at explaining the dynamics of subconscious neurotic trends and how they can be tackled through analytical work.
In my opinion it really helped that she compared the different factors of analysis for both methods: self-analysis and analysis with an expert. This enabled the reader to understand both methods better and made clearer which pros and cons exist for each method.
Despite having done a good amount of self-analysis myself, this book triggered some new thoughts and potential insights, which I have to process now.

I can say a roadmap to being your own in a real sense for this book. A beautiful work written by Karen Horney, which deals with a person's identity with both cognitive, conceptual and emotional experiences, in order for a person to realize himself, become aware of himself. In fact, although this book is a method of recognizing the shell of a person trying to break his own shell, its purpose was to make women ignored as an ego in the patriarchal order and men subject to working-class status realize their marginalized ego, to bring to themselves this large segment that the system first alienated.

Horney reveals the dynamics of stress by focusing on both cognitive and emotional reactions with the concepts of desire, anxiety, loneliness, hope. It is extraordinary that he uses a philosophical language while doing this. Instead of telling us something, it makes us think and, again, in this aspect, it makes the reader self-sufficient.

Please do not treat the book as personal development. "A person is his own doctor." don't go looking for a psychoanalytic treatment for yourself in this book. A person is not his own psychologist, my friends. :) Only you can know yourself. In any case, knowing yourself reveals what you are, and, of course, what you want. Have a pleasant reading.

Case examples improve the readability of what would otherwise be a very dry rendering of theory. Karen Horney is optimistic about a cure for neurosis and human growth, and has an egalitarian approach to psychoanalysis compared to her peers, as evidenced by her seeing herself and the patient as collaborators and by suggesting that self-analysis is even possible.
