Waking up to discover you're a vampire then fanting at the sight of your number one food source isn't healthy.
Billie Joyce’s dream visit to New York City turned into a nightmare. Now not only is she one of the living dead, but she has to contend with a know-it-all vampire who wants to tell her how to talk. Not gonna happen!
Award winning author, Lizzie T. Leaf, started life in Kansas, continued her growing years in North Carolina, and currently shivers through the winters in Colorado. She has numerous e-Books of varying lengths and her first print novel, Struck by Lightning, won dual 2007 Beacon awards. Not a bad track record for a gal who came out of the closet with the dream to write after she turned fifty. Her current works fall into two categories…erotic contemporary or paranormal romance. Her first historical, Making Christmas, through the Aurora Regency line at Musa Publishing won the LRC Best Historical and is a finalist for Best Novealla in the Aspen Gold. Beyond Magic, released through Passion in Print Press, the first book in the Magical Love Series won the 2012 Award of Excellence and is a finalist in the Aspen Gold. When not writing, traveling, reading, gardening and family consume her time.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
Now, at the beginning of DEAD Faint, I was really confused. I felt like I was thrown into this world with little explanation. I mean, all of a sudden I had three vampire characters who were all connected, seemed to know what was going on while I was clueless, etc. I felt like I missed a book or something. Then, when I found out that this is actually book two of the series, it made sense. This isn't the type of series where each book is pretty much standalone with some overlap between books. I would definitely recommend reading DEAD Awake before reading DEAD Faint. Once I figured that out and read DEAD Awake, it made a lot more sense.
I absolutely loved the characters. Billie Joyce (or BJ) was one of my favorites. She's a survivor, fierce and feisty when she needs to be and she won't back down without a fight. She's also not your typical heroine. She's an older woman for one (though her age isn't exactly mentioned) and she has a very odd quirk being a vampire who faints at the sight of blood . I loved seeing her grow from a small town country girl to a sophisticated, capable woman. I love her Southern sayings and how she loves to drive Daniel crazy. I can definitely see myself in her, which helped me connect even more with her. As for Daniel, I wasn't a huge fan of him at first, but he definitely grows on you. I'm still debating who's more stubborn, him or BJ. He's an extremely old vampire, raised in a much more different time and place, which leads to part of the problems between him and BJ. There are parts of the book where I just want to smack him, but he grew on me at the end.
Now, my second favorite character was Dovey Lowell, formerly Deb Stein. She and her husband Aaron were featured in the book DEAD Awake, which is the first book in this series. Dovey also reminds me of myself. She's a funny, sarcastic character and what makes her even more interesting is when you add the pregnancy hormones in. Yep, pregnant vampire makes things so much more interesting and funny. This book also featured her point of view several times, so you got to see more of the improved Dovey in this book. Aaron wasn't around as much and didn't get to see his POV, so I didn't really form an opinion about him. I did kind of like that they were more involved than secondary characters usually are, but I would have loved to see more of BJ and Daniel's development as a couple and I think it would have been nicer if the book was longer. Though there is hope that we'll see more of them in future books along with Dovey and Aaron.
I loved the vampires here. While they don't sparkle and they aren't vegetarians, they also aren't cold-blooded murderers. They have problems just like humans do, though theirs are a bit different (anyone else having trouble their reflection?). There were some other interesting elements thrown in, like pregnant vampires and the crowning of a new vampire king, which I would rather have seen than just read about it happening. All in all though, while different vampire aspects are mentioned, the focus isn't so much on the paranormal element than on the romantic element. I liked their BJ and Daniel's courtship, though it didn't go too well at first. I loved when Daniel finally pulled his head out of his ass and decided to stop making me yell at him and started being the character girls would swoon over.
My only real problem with the book was all the action. The blurb frankly sucked at preparing me for what I would read. So much happened that didn't tie in to the relationship or seemed to be thrown in to make it seem like it would be impossible for the two to work things out. But there weren't as many details. I mean, something huge happens to Daniel and then it's barely mentioned at all, except as a possible problem. There's little development or details. I mean, I know the focus is on their relationship, but come on. That's be like telling someone, "oh yeah, (INSERT NAME) just died", and then just walking away. I wanted to hear more about it and see it play a bigger role and it didn't. Also, while I loved seeing more of Dovey and Aaron (I hate reading series and never seeing previous characters), I also think there were times the story focused more on them than the main couple. Heck, there were times were I was more interested in Dovey than everyone else, which upset me. It's like a bride being upstaged by a bridesmaid, it's not supposed to happen.
All in all though, I did greatly enjoy this book. It was cute, funny, absolutely hysterical at times, and a good read. I would definitely recommend this book to others, and I can't wait to read future books in this series.
Dead Faint is a fast and furiously fun paranormal romance. The story made me grin and I adored the heroine Billie Joyce, a self confessed hillbilly, with a big heart and very colorful language. Billie Joyce meets with trouble when she takes a shortcut down a dark alley in New York and asks the angel she sees as she's dying to help her. Dovey, her rescuer, saves her by changing her into a vampire and Billie Joyce's reaction is classic.
"Ya'll are loonier than a cow after she's been in the thistle patch. There ain't no such thing as vampires."
She's plum full of creative phrases that always made me grin. Billie Joyce, or later, BJ, accepts that she's a vampire now and wants to learn how to handle new life. (I know *snort* my mind immediately went to the gutter on that nickname too, and it's briefly mentioned that BJ can apply to more than horny thoughts :) ) Anyway, she stays with a Dovey's friend Daniel, a nearly 1000 year old vampire. Dovey is going through some surprising changes of her own and it just works out better for BJ go through her transition with Daniel.
One HUGE challenge for BJ is that she faints at the site of blood! That's an amusing issue for a vampire to have and the work around made me laugh . As the story progressed, I found myself admiring Billie Joyce. She is tough and has a core of steel. Her backstory explains a lot and I really wanted a scene where she could share where she was coming from and what she'd overcome with her hero, because her lack of openness frustrated me at times... But her hero, Daniel, admires her without knowing everything about her past. He is drawn to her strength and spirit. She is the only woman in centuries to spark his interest. As BJ and Daniel explore their mutual fascination with each other and fall in love they have to overcome some big obstacles. I was rooting for them to succeed as a couple.
Some of my fav lines...
♥"He wanted her as his wife... though he had to be slightly insane to want to spend eternity fighting with this mulish vampre.... He loved her in spite of all her little quirks and because of them. All the imperfections made her BJ and unique."
♥"Dovey thinks you two are crazy about each other, but BJ is too hard-headed to tell you what she needs and you're too blind to realize you have to woo a woman in this century. The Me Tarzan, You Jane approach doesn't work."
I enjoyed the secondary characters' story line too. Aaron and Dovey (especially!) are very fun and I expect to see more of them in the sequels. I actually wanted Dead Faint to be longer! It's only 90-ish pages, and they whipped past and then I was at the end of the book. I plan to continue the series and hope to see all of these characters again. If you enjoy paranormal romance, vampires and humor and you are in the mood for a quick, cute, amusing little escape, pick up Dead Faint and then take comfort in the knowledge that there are 4 stories in the Dead series right now.
Note: I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Having not read the first part of the Dead series, I wasn't sure if this series of short stories was going to be something I was really going to be interested in. But here it is October so I said to myself, "Sure, let's give a vampire series a go! You've had a long enough rest from the undead supernatural world! Tis the season and all that!" Story one had me from the following line of dialog, allow me to share:
Several minutes later, Billie Joyce's eyelids fluttered. She lay still, not opening her eyes. Dovey didn't have all night to wait for her changeling to get with the program. The creator needed a live snack and the sooner the better. Dovey sat down on the edge of the bed and patted the woman's hand. "What's going on with the passing-out thing?"
"Blood." Billie Joyce kept her eyes tightly shut."I go into a dead faint every time I see blood."
I literally laughed out loud, as the previous was stated by our poor unsuspecting newly-turned vampire Billie Joyce (whose character I enjoyed immensely!) What ensued from that moment did not disappoint, and what I was afraid was going to be a stodgy introduction into a common world of vacuous undead good-lookers, ended up being an entertaining, touching, at times heartbreaking little love story with characters I ended up liking very much.
As a reader new to the serial, I found it fairly easy to follow along, I wasn't at all left feeling like I had to read the first story to get a true idea of the series. Leaf did a great job at writing a world that was fantastically easy to follow, without being boring and old hat. The true downside to this story is how short it is! In fact, I'm not sure I can call this a "book" seeing as each instalment is more the length of a single chapter. At a mere 109 pages, one sneezes and then that's it! I think if it was extended beyond it also wouldn't feel as rushed. Sadly, as with a lot of authors, this little short felt like perhaps it could have filled more space. But either way, in the end I loved reading it and has left me chomping at the bit to begin the next part of the series.
I give this one 4 stars, this is definitely a quirky read! I swear it's like a bag of chips, you can't have just one. The only downside being that it was also small like the snack food as well.
**Adult situations and language, and explicit sexual situations. Not for YA, mature readers only**
This book is as good as the first one, almost. I loved the comedy in it, and loved the return of Dovey and Aaron , as well as Daniel and Rat. I liked that Danil became less stuffy in this book. It did get on my nerves a bit on how hillbilly sounding BJ was. (Billie Joyce, and there is quite the funny part when that nickname came up, lol)
BJ is funny in other ways, besides her nerve grating hillybilly talk, is that she is a new vampire and faints at the sight of blood. I can’t really say much more without giving away too much. But its written brilliantly, and a great addition to the DEAD series. Again, not fond of the covers, it’s the only negative I have. Give it a shot.
When I was offered to read and review this series I was elated! Well…I was too late to read book 1 but I jumped at the chance to read book 2, Dead Faint. O.M.G. This series is hilarious! I now have the first book. (Highly recommended)
If you are looking for a completely different twist on the whole vampire genre, this series is for you. Its laugh out loud funny, sexy and real. I really felt like I was there in the alleyway when Billie Joyce (BJ) was turned and Daniel coming to her rescue…BJ is this timid girl from the country and did not expect to find vampires, become a vampire and have to deal with drinking blood. The ways that she had to drink was priceless.
Daniel is the vampire with the task of trying help BJ in her new world. He didn’t expect to be attracted to her or her to him. Their relationship was sweet and felt completely natural to me. Minus, the blood.
I know that most writers either like being compared to other authors or not but Ms. Leaf’s turn on the vampire world is reministant of MaryJane Davidson with her pacing, plotting and humor. Vampire stories don’t have to be all gothic to make a point and be good.
I would recommend this book and so far, the series to my mother, aunts, cousins for the humor, dialogue and twists and turns the book takes.
*I received this book as part of a blog tour for a fair and honest review*
I'm totally IN LOVE with "BJ"!!!!!! She stub-born,hill-billy and she has a great name :0)
This story is wonderful.....I mean who would of thought of a vampire who faints at blood? Or Better yet....A pregnant vampire!!!! Yes..You read that right!
The characters are so lovable..the men actually act like real men....Totally aloof to how to handle their feelings when it comes to women, never there when you REALLY need them, and always think they know better. Of course the women are stub-born, bitchy, hide their true feelings and of course are always right (duh!) So, basically real humans just with some fangs and some have lived a bit longer..LOL
BJ and Dovey are two fun best friends, I would totally want to hang out with them. I mean Dovey totally saved BJ and helped her adjust to the style of NY, among other things. BJ, in turn was Dovey's lifesaver since of course men seem to miss a bunch...!
I really enjoyed BJ's and Daniel's relationship, it was like a give and take. They were truly made for each other. Each one pushing the others buttons right down until the very end.
Thankfully, the end is not the end and the next story looks to be even more interesting.
Dead Faint is the second book in the series, and it doesn't loose any of the sarcasm, humor and charm that started in the first book, Dead Awake. It's definitely a page turner! I just couldn't put it down.
BJ's charming country slang had me laughing out loud on more than one occasion, which brought some strange looks my way because I took this book everywhere.
Billie Joyce Nolan is a small town girl that is tired of the country life. When her father passes away she decides to visit the biggest of big cities... New York City.
While exploring the Big Apple, BJ found herself in a dark alley with some suspicious characters. Lying there near death, BJ is saved by an angel. But Dovey is no angel, in fact she's quite the opposite, being that she's a vampire.
BJ faces many trials as a newly made vampire, including fainting at the sight of blood. You would think that problem topped the list, but tall, dark and handsome Daniel quickly becomes her biggest challenge. - See more at: http://bookpurses.blogspot.com/2012/1...
A vampire who faints at the site of blood? How can that not be a premise for a great book? I liked the characters, but I didn't really get to know Daniel. This book was just okay for me. If it had been a full length book, it would have been better. This story is 109 pages long. Maybe if I had read the first book, Dead Awake, I would've gotten a little more back story on Daniel. It started out strong, then felt a little rushed but it has great potential. I like the spin Leaf gave to vamps. I liked the story, but I needed more. I actually gave this book 2 1/2 stars.
I received this book from the author/publisher/tour company for review.
"Dead Faint" is the second book of the Dead series. I haven't read the first book, but after reading this one I want to. This a novella about Billie Joyce that is a country. She has some sass and isn't afraid to share that with you. I found this book funny in parts and I loved the sarcasm. Sometimes a writer can overplay a certain quality in a character and I was so happy to read that this wasn't done with Billie Joyce. Due to a series of unfortunate events, BJ gets turned into an accidental vampire. The best part is, she faints at the site of blood. How does a vampire survive this? The characters in this book are very real and they will keep you entertained.
Dead Faint is one of those good vampire novels that you can't put down. The whole Dead Series has turned out to be like that for me. This book had me in stitches when it came to the character Billy Joyce because she reminded me so much of some of the people in the area where I live. I'm from the south and Lizzie has the southern vocab down to an art. I can't wait to see what happens because things got pretty interesting, to say the least, in this installment so who knows what will happen next.
A vampire that faints at the site of blood...I love it! "Lizzie" pens her characters well developed with a touch drama, humor and sarcasm. "Dead Faint" is a fast read which you will find hard to put down. It was a totally enjoyable and humorous read. Recommended for all vampire/thriller fans.
This review is based on a complimentary copy which was provided for an honest review.
Enjoyed the tale of mountain gal turned vampire who faints at the sight of blood. I liked that the characters got annoyed with each other and used language in more likely to hear.
I would have liked this to be longer to savour these characters and their attraction.
