A blind date leaves Harry reeling, and another date goes as badly. Scars on Elijah’s face are clues of a broken soul, yet Harry can’t walk away. Not even when he learns Elijah sees a dead man in mirror reflections.
Elijah’s sanity snaps. Blamed for crimes he didn’t commit, Elijah has already survived a brutal murder attempt and now hides under a Protection Program. Harry must have faith he is innocent and fight for Elijah’s stolen rights.
Can Harry do this without losing his mind, his own rights, and the man he loves?
Zathyn Priest is an Australian writer with severe vampiric tendencies. Absolutely convinced the sun could turn him to a pile of ash, Zathyn prefers to write under the cover of darkness. This serves two purposes, with the first being the afore mentioned sunlight danger, and the second being the fact that nighttime means no annoying phones ringing or people knocking at the door.
Zathyn has written three published novels using this strange moonlight technique. The Curtis Reincarnation, which is now available in paperback. The Slayer’s Apprentice, soon to be available in paperback. And, Liquid Glass, soon to be available from Torquere Press. He has also written two short fiction works. Left of Center, available from Torquere Press, and One of Those Days, an eBook downloadable from www.zathynpriest.com - because even though Zathyn has vampiric traits, he’s actually quite a nice guy and wrote One of Those Days as a freebie.
When Zathyn isn’t writing, or running for cover before sunlight turns him to cinders, he likes to pretend he’s really good at playing his MIDI keyboard. Thankfully, Zathyn is a conscientious neighbour. Rather than drive the street insane with repeated renditions of Greensleeves, he uses headphones because, let’s face it, no matter how beautiful Greensleeves is, most people don’t want to hear it one hundred times a night.
Zathyn lives with a retired greyhound called Chrissy, who lives the life of luxury sleeping away most of her days on the sofa and generally only waking up when there’s food around or if it’s time for a walk. There’s also a cat called Fran, who doesn’t like Chrissy very much and feels she should reiterate this fact by occasionally smacking her in the face. Just when you thought the household couldn’t get any stranger, there’s a duck - or drake, he’d probably rather be called - named Charlie who originally lived on a farm, but moved in with Zathyn after a fox ate all his girlfriends and was eying Charlie for dessert.
Oh WOW. I don't think I have laughed so hard or cried so hard while reading the same story.
At the risk of sounding like fawning fan this book was incredible, amazing and utterly wonderful, except the parts that were so awful I hated them.
No way can I give a concise review without giving away major spoilers. What I can say is this book breaks the bank when it comes to feelings.
From the start I was captured, and while in the beginning I might of gotten a tad annoyed with Harry, he soon won me over with his devotion.
Elijah, omg he broke my heart so many times. Serious ugly face crying went on. He was such a amazing guy.
There are others I want to talk about, but that would just spoil it for those that are yet to read this story. Although I will say I loved Gerald to pieces and I disliked OK hated Margaret with a passion. I would of loved to of seen her struck off the bitch. In fact there were quite a few people I wanted to hunt down and hurt. One of the hardest things about this story was how easily it could be true.
Do not read unless you have already read this one, major spoiler ahead
I wish I could really review this as it deserves, but I could never do it justice. I can say that if you are looking for a real story of love between two guys then look no further. This is romance but not the sickly sweet kind, more the real life kind. There is heartbreak, but there is joy too. There is injustice that can never be forgiven, but there is love at the end.
Wow…just, wow! This, my friends, is storytelling at its masterful best. It encompassed so many emotions, so many trials and tribulations for the characters; it put our protagonists into so many different situations (both good and bad) and with their real world reactions, it brings life to this story, it brings hope, and it brings a deep and abiding love to its incredible characters.
There are so many things going on, so many layers that need to be peeled back so that you get the full impact of what life threw at Elijah, and in the crossfire, Harry. These two amazing men have mountains to climb before they can even become friends let alone even consider being lovers. There is no way I can give proper voice to all the levels of hurt that Elijah lives with, there is no way I can attempt to give justice to the love that Harry heaps upon his broken man in his attempts to save him, but there is redemption after everything is said and done, and that makes it all worth it.
Many books focus solely on the main characters, but this is a story that would be incomplete without the plethora of secondary characters that enhance not only the story, but sets up a world that I can imagine, and feel, and believe is more than just imagination. To me, this is more like a recollection, a recanting of ones history of pain, abuse, grief, and the resultant mental anguish that is the natural progression when life takes everything you have and then kicks you in the face when you’re already down. This is also the story of getting back up, standing on your own two feet, and throwing the lasso over the horns of the charging bull before taking back what was so wrongly stolen.
As per usual, Zathyn Priest is spot on in bringing realism to his art, and none has affected me more than The Slayer’s Apprentice, until now, until, Inside his Reflection. I have a new favorite by this author and cannot wait to see what he comes up with next. Do I recommend this book? Not only do I recommend it, I can already assure you that it will be at the top of my “Favorite Books of 2015” list. That is a recommendation you can take to the bank.
He was never meant to meet Ian. Ian wasn’t the one who needed him, and not the one fate led him to. It might have been a romantic idea to assume destiny stepped in to give Elijah—with all his problems—to a man strong enough to take them on, yet that’s exactly how Harry saw it.
I’ve been putting this one off for awhile because I’m greedy and like a little smut in my reading, and this author isn’t really one to deliver it. In fact so far between this one and The Slayers Apprentice one of the characters in each has been far to broken by past traumas to consider it. Which I guess leads me to my only downside for this book which was I thought it was much to similar, psychologically, to The Slayers Apprentice. While the plots were different it kind of felt like the same ole play book. But I get it, stick with what you’re good at, and this author is good with broken boys. (Side note I’ve made a new shelf called broken-boys)
I really really felt for Elijah, if you don’t cry for him I’m 100% convinced you’re a serial killer...
Anywho obviously I’m not telling you why I felt for him, you just have to read it to understand. In fact again with this one I recommend going in blind.
I will admit while the plot was solid, the background got a little messy for me this time round. Not enough to put the book off for me, but enough for it to start to drag.
And damn it I want a Harry or Henry of my own... I mean my husbands ok... but he’s no Harry... 😉
I think it's common knowledge that I'm a huge fan of Zathyn Priest. He wrote the first story I ever read in the genre (One of Those Days) and another of his is my all-time favorite book in the genre. To say I was excited about a new release would be an understatement. He did not disappoint with Inside His Reflection. This story, while a romance, delves into some serious issues. The author wrote all of them brilliantly. The love story is still there, but it doesn't take center. What does are a couple of characters who have a long way to go before they're able to find any type of real happiness in the world.
This is a very emotional story throughout. While I got teary almost from the first page, I also found myself smiling quite a bit.
Started so good , one of the cutest and funniest meet cute ever, but then everything went to hell. The dialogues, the dynamics between the characters, the story plot was weird and OTT . Something was off with this book , I should have liked it but I didn’t.
Was a wonderful book! I was on the edge of my seat for the entire ride! Went through a gamut of emotions while reading about the main characters' journeys. Such a gripping story and a wonderful ending for all characters. I'll definitely read again.
This is the author doing what he does best ... writing character-driven plots that feature MCs that come with a whole lot of hurt/brokenness. I was duly horrified by the triggered memories and PTSD presented in Elijah's back-story. I'm not au fait with psycho-emotional twin phenomena but I can see how a lot of Elijah's struggles can be tied in with that. I have to say the cute-meet set up at the first chapter was adorable, and happily went along for the ride in their subsequent long/convoluted relational arc. I'm not entirely convinced regarding That said - this was an engaging and moving read (tears in a few places). 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.
Writing about mental illness is tricky. Even if the writer has personal experience with mental breaks or manifestations of grief, it can come off looking silly rather than the serious issue it is. This crossed that line for me. And the relationship, especially with such a troubled man, was too insta. DNF at 60% when I could see where things were going with Harry’s brother Henry (and confirmed by other reviews). None of this felt like real life.
There’s no way I can write a review that does justice to a book I found completely riveting and mesmerizing so I’ll keep this fairly simple.
The plot is very intricate and weaves together a number of different threads representing challenges and enormous injustices rained down on not only the primary characters (Elijah and Harry), but also secondary characters that were equally integral to the whole of the story. And while there’s a strong thread of romance involved here, it’s doesn’t necessarily take center stage under the spotlight.
This is a story where less is truly more – in other words, the less that I say as a reviewer and the fewer details I provide about all the things that made this book special, the more you will appreciate it (trust me on this). This book deserves to be shrouded in mystery so that each reader can experience the journey and uncover all the hidden gems that suck you in and make you lose all track of time and place.
Expect to experience a full range of emotions as you read this story. It has depth, it has characters you will become invested in who are definitely not perfect, and it has a master storyteller at its foundation who clearly labors to bring forward his best work each and every time. That … is a winning combination. Do yourself a favor. Grab this book and go find yourself a nice and cozy little corner to snuggle (hide out) in while you enjoy one of the treasures of 2015. Brilliant!
WOW WOW WOW!!!!! THAT WAS AN AMAZING READ. If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would it is definitely a 5 Plus story.
In lieu of writing reviews – I’m taking an extended break – I decided to leave this list showing some of the reasons for the stars I’ve given to the stories I’ve read.
5 Stars – Given to stories that had me falling in love with the characters, had me so engaged in the plot I couldn’t put the book down and stories that either made me cry buckets and/or laugh until I cried. 4 Stars– Given to stories that I REALLY enjoyed reading but had me wishing for just a bit more. 3 Stars – Given to stories that I thought were worth the read but they didn’t knock my socks off. 2 Stars – Given to stories that didn’t work for me. I couldn’t connect to the MCs or feel any sort of connection between them. I couldn’t follow the plot or there wasn’t a plot. Every so often one of these stories just needs work to fix what went wrong but mostly 2 star reads are stories that leave me wondering why I kept reading until the end. 1 Star - I RARELY give out 1 Star so when I do it means the story was a complete train wreck.
I know what I may love another reader may wonder what the hell I was thinking and vise versa but I’m okay with that!
I love Zathyn's books, because they grab you from the first page and you simply can't put them down until you finish it.
I knew that would be the case with Inside his reflection too... And I was soo right!!!
We meet Harry while he's going to another blind date, and OMG, it couldn't be funnier seeing him talking to Elijah for the first time... I was giggling the whole scene...
Elijah took a piece of my heart and refused to give it back, even after I finished the book... I was amazed that he had any sanity left after all that happened in his life. It's no wonder he snaps, I was just glad he had Harry in his life when that happened.
It's touching the lenght Harry will go to be sure Elijah is safe, sane and loved.
Zathyn did another masterpiece that will take you in an emotional roller coaster. Harry and Elijah will melt your heart and made you cry as I did.
I can't begin to understand how this author does this. Time after time. Great, interesting storyline; amazing deep, rich characters and just a good , involved read. Never disappointed.
Extraordinarily well written. A few minor editorial faux pas. Fleshed out characters. Original plot. One hell of an emotional ride. Highly recommended.
Always a pleasure to pick up a book expecting nothing and receive everything. I was beginning to despair having read and re-read my favourite authors. Lately I seem to have put aside a dozen or more books unfinished and then to pick up this author, with few expectations, and be taken on a journey experiencing such a kaleidoscope of emotion.
A pleasure to read an author of great talent, wit and depth. Its like finding a special treasure. You want to shout out to the world and exclaim its worth to all.

So darn cute! I’m really excited about this book. I’ll start off by saying that the only reason I chose to read this was because I met the author at a book signing at GRL this year. Though I’m nowhere near reading something from every author I met there, I’m really glad that I took a chance on Zathyn Priest.
Inside His Reflection begins starts out with a country guy, Harry, going to a meet a guy for a blind date. When he sees Elijah, he thinks this is the guy he was supposed to meet, but he’s not at all disappointed when he learns this isn’t the case. Since Elijah is a city guy, Harry thinks Elijah might be too good for him, but he quickly learns how insecure and fragile Elijah really is. The truth is that Elijah has a secret past and was the victim of violence.
Though there are some dark themes in this book, the story wasn’t dark at all. However, I have to advise that since Elijah is dealing with psychological issues caused by a traumatic event in his childhood, there are some triggers with topics such as suicide, sexual abuse, and mental illness. Luckily Elijah has support from those who love him. The story starts out as a romance, but is quickly woven into plots and conspiracies involving the police, the FBI, and a wicked, plotting psychiatrist. Though there are many plot twists and slightly unbelievable occurrences, the story wraps up in the end as the sweet romance it seems to be in the beginning.
I have to admit that I wasn’t sold on this book immediately, but the intrigue sucked me in and by the end I was cooing from the sweetness of it all. Since I tend to judge books by their covers, I really wasn’t expecting such a darling character as Elijah. Even though he was obviously messed up psychologically, he was extremely lovable and Harry never once gives up on him. I also loved that the author made such a likable autistic character. Overall, this book was fantastic. I recommend Inside His Reflection to anyone who loves sweet m/m romance.
Inside His Reflection could be called an intense read and for some it may be just that. When Harry meets Elijah, he sees a beautiful man that immediately calls to him. Not so slowly it is revealed that Elijah’s mind is broken–completely shattered–by the effects of a violent crime that happened ten years prior. The crime set forth a chain reaction of way more than Elijah could deal with. While he has a job and appears to hold it together, he has never gotten the proper help he needs and exists with an arsenal of medication. Elijah’s character and subsequent breakdown were one of the areas that highlighted what Priest is capable of writing as this was the first book I have read by this author.
I was expecting an intense read here and that was what drew me to the book. While Elijah is presented as both a victim and a survivor, the rest of the story never came together for me and fell apart in many places. While Elijah’s current state is well drawn, everything around him is not. The author does not make us wait too long to see glimpses of what Elijah is dealing with, but all we really get are glimpses. This is a book where much cannot be spoken of without giving vital details away, but Elijah’s backstory, family, and current situation living under an assumed identity are not offered in enough detail to give a full picture of the story.
The twin connection was explored between Harry and Henry, also between Elijah and Chris.
Elijah gives a good explanation of how autism affected Chris.
What I wanted to see was someone taking down Elijah's parents. Make they pay for what they did to their sons. The parents clearly didn't know their own children.
