Zathyn Priest

Zathyn Priest is an Australian writer with severe vampiric tendencies. Absolutely convinced the sun could turn him to a pile of ash, Zathyn prefers to write under the cover of darkness. This serves two purposes, with the first being the afore mentioned sunlight danger, and the second being the fact that nighttime means no annoying phones ringing or people knocking at the door.

Zathyn has written three published novels using this strange moonlight technique. The Curtis Reincarnation, which is now available in paperback. The Slayer’s Apprentice, soon to be available in paperback. And, Liquid Glass, soon to be available from Torquere Press. He has also written two short fiction works. Left of Center, available from Torquere Press, and One of Those Days, an eBook downloadable from www.zathynpriest.com - because even though Zathyn has vampiric traits, he’s actually quite a nice guy and wrote One of Those Days as a freebie.

When Zathyn isn’t writing, or running for cover before sunlight turns him to cinders, he likes to pretend he’s really good at playing his MIDI keyboard. Thankfully, Zathyn is a conscientious neighbour. Rather than drive the street insane with repeated renditions of Greensleeves, he uses headphones because, let’s face it, no matter how beautiful Greensleeves is, most people don’t want to hear it one hundred times a night.

Zathyn lives with a retired greyhound called Chrissy, who lives the life of luxury sleeping away most of her days on the sofa and generally only waking up when there’s food around or if it’s time for a walk. There’s also a cat called Fran, who doesn’t like Chrissy very much and feels she should reiterate this fact by occasionally smacking her in the face. Just when you thought the household couldn’t get any stranger, there’s a duck - or drake, he’d probably rather be called - named Charlie who originally lived on a farm, but moved in with Zathyn after a fox ate all his girlfriends and was eying Charlie for dessert.

Alexander Bell is a young chiropractor who enjoys his work, drives a nice car, and has great friends. Ric Saunders is a former high-school bully who made Alexander’s life hell eight years ago and unexpectedly seeks treatment at the clinic where Alex and his father work.

I was pleasantly surprised at how sweet, humorous, and touching this short story was. Ric and Alex are well drawn, believable, and very engaging characters. I keenly felt the emotional turmoil Alex experienced at first seeing Ric’s name in the patient file, his anger while treating him, and as their relationship grew, the internal struggle he faced trying to forgive Ric for the pain he caused in the past and accepting the changed man he had become.

I thought the flash-forward ending was cool and would have liked it even better if it had been a little further in the future.

Available for free here

1/31/13 - Just finished reading the new version and noticed the ending was changed. I don't remember any creepy stalking spiders in the original story! I also think Ric's character was developed more with deeper insight into his past.

READ. THIS. BOOK.

NOW, GO!

I am serious guys, if you are having one of those days and you need a good laugh please read this book. I finished it a few mins ago and I loved it. This is the first time I try this author and I am pretty sure it won't be the last one.

First of all, THANKS BEV! This is just what I needed!

You know when you just need a silly funny story so you can laugh and forget that is raining outside when it should be almost summer??? Yeah, you get the idea. Then you discover this little gem and you realize this is not a silly funny story, there is much more than that.

Alex and Rick met a few years ago in school and let's say they weren't besties. Rick was always laughing at Alex and treating him like shit so when Alex sees him a few years later he freaks out.

When you spend most of your life being the fat, ugly kid who's teased mercilessly, you pray one day you'll wake up looking gorgeous

I know this sounds superficial but I've been there so I completely understand Alex and even though we should all work in our egos a little bit it's so freaking good when "people turns heads for all the right reasons" as Alex would say.

And then, there's this FUNNY as hell part that made me laugh so hard. The first time they see each other in Alex chiropractic clinic was so freaking hilarious!

"They've done brain scans, too"
"Did they find anything"
"No"
"Why doesn't that surprise me?"

The way Alex teased Ric all the time was to die for. He was ADORABLE!

And ok, it is not that real that you fall for your school bully but if you don't look that much into it you'll love this short story, I wish this had been a long length book. I miss them already.

Zathyn Priest has become of my favorite authors. In my opinion his writing is very unique. He is either making me laugh with his interesting dialog and loveable characters like in The Curtis Reincarnation, or scaring the hell out of me in The Slayers Apprentice. Either way, I love his work, and I look forward to reading more by him.

One Of These Days is a very short novel. It takes place in the space of one day and is told in first person through Alex's point of view. It is a lighthearted story, telling the beginnings of a budding romance between Alexander Bell and Richard Saunders.

Alex is a successful chiropractor, who is having the day from hell. He locked his keys in the house, was stuck in heavy traffic, his receptionist called in sick, his dog ate his cereal and this is all before nine o'clock!

It even gets worse when he notices Richard Saunders, who was his childhood tormentor and bully in the lobby as his next patient. Richard was horrible to Alex.
Alex was overweight and outspoken about his homosexuality, and Richard made sure every day of Alex's high school years was a living hell.

Times have changed. Alex is no longer the overweight and quiet nerd he once was. But, seeing Richard brings back all the bad memories and he once again feels like that insecure, unhappy teenager he once was.
Alex is tempted to cancel his appointment, but being the professional that he is, he decides to bite the bullet and see if he can help Richard out.

Richard is not the boy he once was. As the popular high school jock, he had to keep his homosexuality in the closet. When he saw Alex, who was able to be open about who he was, his resentment and fear of being discovered made him torment the boy he really wanted to be friends with. He has been remorseful of his behavior toward Alex, and to try to make up for it became a counselor to help gay teens become accepted in school and elsewhere.

When Richard finally recognizes Alex, he immediately does what he can to make up for all of the hurt and shame he once caused him. Now, grown up Richard hopes to prove to Alex he is a changed man, and in the process gain Alex's forgiveness, too.

The more Richard and Alex are around one another, the more sparks fly. Neither can deny the chemistry and attraction they have for one another, but unless Alex does not forgive Richard, their budding relationship will never survive.

This book is about forgiveness. I thought both Alex and Richard were very well developed characters despite how short the novel was. This book has Zathyn's humor as well as his snappy dialog that is one of his trademarks.

I loved it. So cute and sweet and perfect for a quick and easy read.

I saved the very best for last...this book is FREE! Yep, FREE! Just go to:

And download it.

Also, his live journal is awesome. He seems like a very interesting man, much like the characters he writes about. Check it out at:

One of those days...
No, it never was going to be an ordinary day. What started off as a nightmare turned into a day etched forever into my memory.

Aww, why'd you have to go and only be 26 pages long?!?!
I'm going to keep this short and to the point, much like this novella.

Ric and Alex cracked me up. They were adorable and Alex's quirky inner dialogue had me laughing constantly. Who would have thought I would ever enjoy inner ramblings?

Bad boy doctor, who turned from an ugly duckling into a swan, does handsome straight football captain who turns gay at the mere sight of his irresistible chiropractor.

Oh my god...this was so freaking funny. I laughed my ass off and almost peed my pants.

It was perfect and just what I needed :D

We also get some enemies to lovers, an ugly duck turned into a swan....

And a former bully trying to redeem himself

All of that, in this short little story !! It was awesome, thanks Susan !!!

5 Stars!! This is “one of those books”…and what kind of book would that be?? An absolute GEM!!!

How is it possible for an author to take so few words, so few pages, and make a short story read like full length novel?! By combining humor, fun, passion, sensuality, and witty dialogue and then not wasting a single word or thought. Zathyn Priest is one of those writers who has an innate ability to draw on a reader’s emotions right along with the characters.

Alexander Bell, yes you heard that right, is a chiropractor and when he realizes that his first patient of the day is his childhood tormentor, Richard Saunders, well…he freaks out a little. I laughed out loud at Alex’s crazy internal dialogue, just hysterical. Ric has no idea who he is and Alex uses this knowledge to do a little tormenting of his own.

” I picked up a pen, clicking it furiously with my thumb like I do when I’m angry or nervous. “Do you prefer to be called Richard or Dick?”
“Ric.”
“Dick? I’ll make a note of that on your file.” I spoke aloud as I wrote. “Patient prefers to be called Dick.”
“No, Ric.”
“Have you ever been to a chiropractor before, Dick?” When I heard him sigh in exasperation, I couldn’t help smiling.

Aside from all the fun in the book there is a serious underlying message about bullying. It’s just wrong and should not be tolerated at all…never, ever! However, once Ric reveals issues from his childhood that drove him to do what he did, I had to forgive him, even though he still had trouble forgiving himself.

It was a lovely story and I would enjoy seeing see Alex and Ric’s story continue, as was hinted at, but I was satisfied with the read from beginning to end. It felt complete and left me smiling. I highly recommend it.

The author gives you the choice of downloading the Plain Text Version, or the Graphic/Illustrated version of One of Those Days for free! I chose the illustrated version and the pictures are classy and striking…just lovely. However, the story holds its own without any images. The author’s writing is descriptive enough to give the reader what they need to imagine the characters and setting, without having to look at pictures.

Thank you Monique for your lovely review, check it out people, which ultimately led me to reading this story! Also, thanks to Zathyn Priest for offering this little treasure for free!

Well.

This was an unexpectedly intense story. I was thinking it was going to be a lighter sort of revenge reunion but the trauma that Ric put Alex through in highschool was almost something that you can't come back from in any kind of healthy way.

Thankfully this had a good grovel element because it was definitely needed.

There were a lot of heavy emotions going on here but it didn't feel like a heavy story, I found there was a nice balance of humour and chemistry to lighten things up a bit. I'm curious to see if Priest does continue their story. I got a good vibe from them despite the shaky start and have hopes for their future as a couple.

This was really funny short from Mr Priest, and has made me buy even more of his books!

Alex was having one of those days when nothing was going right. His alarm went off an hour early, the dog ate last of cereal, the cat decides to jump into fish tank, no clean laundry, flat tyre on car.....you get the picture. Then he gets to work at Bell's Chiropractics, a partnership with his father, and discovers that the usual receptionist is missing, and has been replaced by Janet, who is extremely hormonal, and would freeze anyone's dangly bits off at 10metres!! But the absolute coup de grace is discovering that the person who made his life a living hell at school, Ric Saunders, is his first customer of the day!!

Much as he wishes to tell Mr Saunders exactly where to go, he deals with his patient professionally, lots of funny things happen whilst the treatment is being dispensed, and although he recognises his bully from school, the bully doesn't recognise Alex until he hears Alex's name at the very end of the session. Needless to say, Alex has no intention of treating Mr Saunders again, and goes to pieces at the practice, Janet being on hand to actually dispense a little sympathy!!

Ric then starts to stalk Alex (or so Alex thinks) in the hope of apologising for his previous disgraceful behaviour at school, and to ask Alex out, as surprise, surprise, the reason he was so nasty to Alex at school, was that he was gay, and didn't want anyone to know, so it was alright for everyone to pick on Alex as long as they left him alone!! Surprisingly Alex accepts the apology, and from then on, the two of them start a relationship, which hopefully will lead to bigger and better things!! Yay, I do love Happy Endings!!

This is a little gem. I loved everything about this story. The banter between Alex and Janet his caustic sarky nurse asets the books humour up perfectly! Then the story really takes off when his school bully nemesis , Ric Saunders walks into his practice and sets of a chain of events that had me smiling like a silly fool, all the way through! Alex can't believe that Rics appeared back in his life, and the first meeting when Ric, who doesn't recognise Alex straight away, is laugh out loud. Then watching Ric practically stalk and frighten Alex to death, before he finally gives in and gives him a chance to finally apologise and explain how Alex changed his life for the better, is just delightful! Don't get me wrong the message is strong and clear, Ric was not a nice guy when he was younger but of course there were reasons why he acted why he did and he tries desperately to explain to Alex, who is so freaked out by seeing him again he won't give him the time of day! He spends most of his working day trying to avoid or run from Ric, who is not the same man who scarred his early life but 8 years down the line Alex is still carrying the hurt and baggage from their past history. This is pretty short but its one of those short stories that never felt rushed because the characters are so endearing and you get lost in their story. It's funny, witty, sexy, romantic and poignant in part and it was free. I really like Zathyns style of writing and will definitely search out his others. The ending is perfect.

This is hysterical! I laughed so much I underlined half of my kindle reading it. This book is perfect if you are stuck in your reading, if you are tired of the same story, if you are down or if you want to laugh for the sake of it. It’s like the degreaser after swallowing tons of bacon or taking your shoes off after half a day walking, a relieve of everything else!

“Expect to hear a whole lot of bones crunching and cracking.”
He stared at me wordlessly. For a moment he seemed scared until his blue eyes wandered over my face and resulted in unnerving me instead. “Thanks for the warning.”

It’s funny because the boy in the cover reminds me of my older brother. I’m serious, he manages the same expression and they are quite alike.

“Then sit on the table and look straight ahead.”
“Okay.” My abrupt bedside manner obviously had him thinking about putting his skeletal system into my hands. “Where should I put my jacket?”
Shove it up your ass! “Give it to me.” He handed it over and I tossed it into the corner of the room.
“I could’ve done that myself.” He sniggered.

I’m very cautious with shorties or novellas, but lately I’ve found so very good stories, so my idea of those is changing, more or less. This one is hilarious and crazy to read. I’ve never have read a better doctor’s scene apart from Family Guy’s, (when Peter Griffin is told that he is fat).

“I assure you I’m qualified, Dick. Graduated three days ago.” A lie because I graduated two years ago. “You are my first patient.”
“You’ve never done this before?”
“Of course I have.” I’ve never seen sweat form on someone’s brow so quickly. “On mannequins. But the principle is the same.”
“Maybe I should make an appointment for another day.”

Alexander Bell is a chiropractor and his new client is his nemesis, Ric Saunders, his bully in high school. Alex is unrecognizable, so he takes advantage of the situation and acts like brainless professional.

“You sure you know what you are doing?”
“Pretty sure.” I nodded and pointed to a poster on the wall. “If I get confused, I’ll just look at that and it tells me what bone is connected where.”

But Ric has changed, he still is the most handsome man he’s ever known, but he regrets his past actions and tries to compensate for his mistakes. Now he helps children that are abused, and Alex is confused by the mixed signals: the good vibes the Ric in the present exudes and the bad experience from the Ric in the past.

A patient must be relaxed and I waited until I felt his chin settle into my palm. I then placed my other hand at the back of his head. “So how long did you say you’ve been having…”
In one swift, fast movement I twisted his head to the right. A fraction more and I could’ve broken his neck. Oh, what a pleasant thought. The cracking of his vertebra sounded awesome!
“Jesus Christ!” Both his hands gripped the side of the table.
“Did that hurt?”
“Ummm… no.”
What a pity.

And Ric is mesmerized by Alex so he chases Alex everywhere, to the point for Alex to believe him a stalker, sending flowers, asking for a dinner, etc. All of this create funny scenes and priceless dialogues.

Why did he have to stare at me so appreciatively? It almost made him look like he possessed a soul.

And, believe it or not, this book is romantic. Ok, it only plays one day, but the HEA is adorable, so I consider this a perfect recipe with all the ingredients to have one of those days when the sun shines.

”Whatever I order, you are paying for it, Dick.”
Ric nudged me in the arm with his elbow. “The only reason i’m letting you get away with that is ‘cause you invented my favorite toy.”
We started walking away from my car, side by side. “I never invented vibrators.”
“Telephone!” The palm of Ric’s hand settled onto my lower back and he laughed as he spoke. “By the way, are you ever scared you might break someone’s neck when you do that chiropractor head twisting thing?”
“No. But I wanted to break yours.”
“Don’t blame you in the slightest.”

One of Those Days was pure entertainment on a stick. A short, but fully developed story far too adorable for its 24 pages.

Cute, sweet and hilarious, with an awesome plot, great dialogue and an amazing main character with a charming and beautiful "voice".

Alex has one of those days, you know the ones when everything goes awry from the moment you open your eyes. And his day gets worse by the minute. Until the cherry on top makes its appearance in the form of his former bully, who now is his patient. What can go wrong, right?

It was like Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day: M/M Edition. Funny thing is, the MC’s name really is Alex. Alex is having a crappy day. It gets even crappier when he finds out his next patient is his high school nemesis. Told in the first person, Alex’s inner monologue is very amusing. An enjoyable read!

A short sweet funny as hell little romance.

The begining of this short fic had me laughing out loud. Later on it had me choking up.You may find the subject of a vicious bully and his victim falling in love to far fetched to believe in, and I guess in reality it is, although they do say fact is stranger than fiction, but in a fictional story this was perfectly reasonable and totally sweet.

Alex is an adorable Pedantic/Anally retentive young guy that went from ugly duckling into beautiful swan, and like the fairy tale he gets his HEA. Ric or Dick redeemed himself in the way a true fairy tale allows.

A lovely short and sweet story for when you just need that quick pic me up.

On the good side, parts of this story were funny (when I wasn't thinking about them too hard).

Who doesn't work with teenagers may have forgotten how vicious they can be. Gossip and bullying can reach impressive levels. The strangest thing is that a lot of them become decent adults. Some are ashamed of their past actions, some aren't, but most of them never reach that level of viciousness again. That's the reason I believed Ric even if I thought that Alex's trauma disappeared too quickly.

On the other/bad side: what a hell is that caricature of a woman (the receptionist) supposed to represent? Women at 'that time of the month' equals 'horns growing out on our heads' is definitely not funny. While some things were really funny, that certainly was not.

It was an ok story, though I was expecting more.

Alex seemed very childish with an attitude definitely meant for high school hallways, not a 26 years old man seemingly achieved in all aspects. It was hard picturing a man with his personal and professional life so organised turn into a floundering teenager. And if his high school years were so awful, I expected Alex to despise Ric (Dick) not switch between throwing accusations at him and suddenly realising how hot and perfect he is.

While there were some funny moments, ultimately, the story didn't feel real to me.

I saw this story reviewed by several of my friends on GoodReads and it was receiving such praise, I had to check it out. Much to my delight, it's not only a delicious read, it's a FREE one too.

A quick short fic that will have you laughing and squirming in your seat!

Summary: When Alex wakes up one morning, and everything starts to go wrong, he knows it’s going to be one of those days. Things get worse when his high school bully, captain of the football team and meathead extraordinaire, Ric Saunders, shows up for an appointment at the chiropractic clinic where Alex works.

Things go from bad to worse in a comedy of errors that leaves Alex's head spinning. Has Ric turned into a crazed stalker, ready to pick up the bullying where he left off eight years before? Or has Ric got something else in mind this time?

Why I loved this read: I love stories that make me laugh and get me hot-and-bothered all at once and this story does just that! Plus, you gotta love the bully-turned-lover stories! ;)

Excerpt: “I’ve got an appointment for nine. Richard Saunders.”

“A bit late?” Janet snarled. “Eight minutes late is almost ten minutes late. Ten minutes late is not a bit.”

Go Janet! Let him have it. Set free the hormonal rage!

“I tried to call. Phone battery was dead.” Ric sounded exactly the same as he did in school and it made my skin crawl. “My mother’s in hospital. I came straight from the ER. Food poisoning.”

“Oh, I see.” From meltdown to temperate, Janet calmed. “I’m sorry to hear that.”

Don’t be sorry! I tried to will my thoughts to penetrate directly into Janet’s mind. The woman gave birth to him for God’s sake. She deserves to be punished!
