Sandra I see that all the answers went to the obvious. My take is that the author saw the obvious, and was a sick of this book as I was at that point and, like my engineering professors, decided to leave the rest of the work to the the student, or rather the reader. So, I am content with saying, misery and mayhem, cat fights, wimpy Tom gets caught in the crossfire. Nobody is happy in the end.
