The short stories are the actual events relating to the lost objects, not short stories written by Laura or Anthony. This becomes clear when characters from the short stories begin to appear in the main narrative.

Nice to have the answer from the author herself, although the mere fact that the stories were true does not seem to rule them out as having been written by Anthony or Laura. Anthony could have been able to sense the history of the items, in a similar way to Sunshine. Laura could be basing her short stories on what she was told by owners when they reclaimed the items.
The author might, of course, respond that it is her story and so she is right by definition. She certainly has the right to say what she intended when she wrote the book, but if the book leaves open alternative explanations perhaps the reader need not feel bound by this?
