I would advise reading it before making this decision (you know your community better than anyone) but I would say YES it would make an excellent high school lit book. There is much to discuss about the book and the history it reflects. While there is sexual abuse (mostly mentioned versus detailed) and physical abuse (more graphic in description), it is not gratuitous but necessary to the story. NoveList, an excellent read-alike/reader's advisory database used by/subscribed to many libraries, has added the tag of "adult books for teens" and I agree wholeheartedly with their decision.
