Can this be read as a standalone as I heard this was the best book of this series and I can not be bothered to read the rest. If there's not too many links between this book and the first one; does someone mind just telling me the links and spoiling the first book so I can just read the second one?

You've heard correct :) This really IS the best book of this series (best book of the year for me) I will try to help you out without spoiling. There are a few flashback chapters that include incidents from book 1 but it's not much. It's recommended to read in order but I don't see a problem with reading this first. I love this a million times more than the other two books so I would say it's ok . I wasn't a big fan of book 1 tbh and because of that, it took me around 4 months to pick this one up. And now I wish I read this sooner. After you read this one you would prolly want to read the first one too. This book is THAT good. If you ever decide to read in order and don't happen to like Book 1 please don't stop like I did. Keep going. Christan is just *chefs kiss*
