Leah I would strongly advise that a 14 year old not read this book. This book is... a lot... even for an adult. There are some seriously mature themes and scenes that frankly no one is really equipped to process, let alone a young teen. I also don't think it will be fully understood or appreciated by a teenager as much as it would by an adult who has experienced more of the world.
Beth Absolutely not, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I crave a time in my life before this book, not only is it extremely mature to a point that words cannot accurately convey but it has ruined sad books for me. It is a gem of a book and having experienced what is essentially the apex of depressive literature means its only down from here.
Daniel Gomez As a 14-year-old who has read the book, I would say not to read it, whilst yes I understand how much of a contradiction that is, it is mature beyond a point my brain can't fully understand. I struggle with MDD and although it doesn't make an exception, I can say I can handle more of a heavy topic since I myself have been through SH and other types of self-trauma. Needless to say, this book did trigger things in me and I had to put it down at points for it was extremely heavy, but it's not worth sacrificing your mental health over. Ultimately you are probably gonna ignore these comments and read it anyway, but if there's a chance you haven't, let it remain that way.
Amelie✨ I'm not saying this to mean that you personally aren't capable of handling it because in reality most people aren't equipped for this book and that can lead to a lot of emotional damage. I waited until I was in a good place emotionally to read this and it still traumatized me. If I had to re-do it, I wouldn't touch the book with a ten foot pole at any age.
Lizzy I wouldn't recommend it. They'd have to be an incredibly mature and well-adjusted to cope with it, in my opinion.
Lisa Loffredo I strongly do not recommend. I'm 44 and struggled, to the point that I couldn't finish it. It is beautifully written, but you need to be emotionally very mature and stable to read it.
