i would definitely read them in order. The Talented Mr. Ripley establishes the basis for his character and subsequent behaviour.

The later novels (particularly the fourth and fifth) draw heavily on characters, relationships and events established in the first and second novel, also there is the character development of the titular Mr Ripley, so I would definitely recommend following the chronology.
