I think it is VERY loosely based on the book. The book is about a young farmer named Charlie who takes over a sugar cane farm after her daddy dies, but most other things about it are different than the show. In the book there are only two siblings, Charlie and Ralph Angel, no Nova like in the show.
The show's only real similarities are the names of characters, though they behave differently between the show and the book, and a sugar cane farm.
