The Dust Bowl aspect is important and clearly a statement on our contemporary behaviors around the environment. So far, I like the two main characters really well and find some of the surrealistic details interesting.

Short Fiction: The Other Side of the Hedge

The old man next door had died a month or so before Tom and Mallory moved in. Living next to an abandoned house, particularly one with disordered stacks of files and boxes visible through each of the upstairs windows, a lawn overrun with creeping charlie, and a looming 20-ft boundary hedge that hadn’t been pruned in decades, wasn’t an ideal situation or investment, but theirs was a two-story red b Read more of this blog post »

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.”
Mark Twain, The Innocents Abroad / Roughing It
