Where to start... This Prince Roman by C.D. Reiss is a special nugget of insight to so much... Reiss' Talent, Today's Times and the platform of 1001 Dark Nights...All wrapped up in a tale so well done... it could be used as a guide for future writers.
Writing shorter stories can be tricky...will there be enough description of the characters to capture our interest and understand their motivations... Will there be enough substance throughout to merit our concern and identify, care and believe what is happening... and most of all do we feel like we were given it all with nothing left to chance or rushed...
Because shorter means everything counts...Every set up, scene, bridge, conflict and outcome... there is no room to regroup or smooth over.
In Roman Prince...Reiss hits every note for me. She takes all she learned and presented from King of Code and laced it into this. She takes the real quandary of today's working world... Where you spend more of your waking hours at your work environment making it more than difficult to meet other people... people you might be attracted to...or develop feelings for...
This situation is a breeding ground for the complicated issue of relationships between employees. Numerous companies wanting to steer clear of any litigation of any kind have started to ban any type of coupling. This way they are under the mistaken impression they will be safe from any sexual harassment accusations.
It is with this in mind, the new company Raven Crosby is starting with, has brought in a firm which promises a fool proof system of Weeding Out:
Any salary bias between men and women
Any sexual harassment of any kind
And institutes an Absolutely No Fraternization policy with its workers
Raven came from QI4, a top tech company and had been having a work/buddies arrangement with the creator for awhile. It had been mutually agreed upon... both just using each other for release. Yet when the man came back after dealing with a company crisis, Raven sensed a change. She was fine with it ending but it did make her feel as if she needed to reassess her way of working and what she wanted...
What she wanted was security...
She wanted to have a constant in her life...
Something she never had growing up or in early adulthood...
Now was the time and this position would be the answer to her stability needs.
Then Roman Bianchi walks into the first meeting Raven is having at her new company and makes it difficult for her to think, speak or act like the professional she is...She collects herself as best as she can...remembering her vow to stay away from workplace romances or hook ups. She had been there/done that- and she was not going down that road again.
Roman is a man on a mission; he loves his position and practicing law. He is holding out for the "Brass Ring of Success" Partnership... his name on the letterhead. His boss has more than hinted to him this contract with this company could make it all happen...But seeing this woman in front of him... a bit flustered...and done up in professional trappings... makes him wonder what is she wearing underneath it all...
These two are thrown together to map out this harassment program all the while fighting the need that develops equally for the both of them...Brakes are applied... but as the way of the world...When the desire is there...sometimes it cannot be stopped...
Reiss takes us on a cat and mouse game where both players switch being the cat or mouse...The need and desires are equal, the risks are front and center...and when feelings start to emerge...WTF are they going to do now...
This shorty has more than what is on the page...it allows the reader to see clearly all of the ramifications that are presented with real twists and turns that happen in the workplace. The coupling of these two... Copyrighted Reiss ...Never to just fill up a page...Always constructed with layers upon layers of sensuality or raw taking...and then the insight of what the actions meant to the characters...whether they understood it or not...
I don't think Reiss could write a grocery list without meaning... and aren't we lucky for that.
Prince Roman is a delicious journey into Reiss' newly discovered interest in the Silicone Valley. It is worth the time.

4.5 Rules Are Meant To Be Broken Stars

CD Reiss returns to the world of hackers and corporate boardroom games with her 1001 Dark Nights novella, Prince Roman. It’s an engaging, smart, and sexy read that’s sure to please fans of the series and new fans alike. I loved it!
What I loved: The premise of the book really stood out for me. Being a female in a male dominated work force and understanding the office politics of working in corporate America really made this a fun read.
I loved both characters immensely. The initial game they play with one another in the boardroom was super cute and almost like a form of foreplay. Who hacked who the best has its merit. But Roman really stands out. He’s a great male lead. He’s strong and charismatic, but also giving and sweet. I loved the characteristics and how they play off one another.
I didn’t see the story playing out the way it did. That’s one of the things CD Reiss always does so well. Her stories aren’t predictable in the least. You always get a fun and thoughtful read from her. What’s most impressive though, is how much she fit into this super short novella. Man, I swear she’s a magician.
Overall, this was a huge win for me. Interesting. Smart. Sexy. Fun and Flirty! That sums up this novella perfectly! I highly recommend it. I know everyone loved Taylor, but I'm thinking Prince Roman owns my heart….at least until Keaton returns to claim it.

Prince Roman is a fabulous and very, very SEXY, '1,001 Dark Nights,' standalone novella that offers a glimpse into the latest character world of CD Reiss. A short read that totally satisfied my craving for a light, straightforward romance where intelligent, unlucky in love lady, meets handsome, protective man who completely sweeps her off of her feet and carried me along for the swoonsome ride.
Raven, the female protagonist, has a new job and rules to ensure she keeps her job, remaining professional at all times. Add to the mix a sexy, delicious man whose charismatic charm is downright gorgeous. Roman Bianchi, a suit wearing prince of Silicon Valley and Raven's co-worker is intelligent, funny, personable and so very, very HOT! What could possibly go wrong? The unfolding story, as well as being fun to read, is delightfully laced with the author's flare for writing a smoking hot, vivid narrative that pulled me into the heart of their relationship. The characters do not take long to give into their passion and undeniable attraction to each other setting the perfect pace for a novella length story that flows effortlessly and has a beautiful sweet side as well as an engaging story-line threaded throughout to keep the reader wondering about the outcome of this sexy short.

Prince Roman was a quick, sexy, and entertaining read that I finished in one sitting. Though I'm as far from techie as possible and at times I thought the gamer details would lose me, the author managed to pull it off and keep me totally invested in the story. Admittedly, they weren't my favorite parts, simply because a lot of it flew right over my head, but they didn't bore me either.
My favorite part of the book were the strong main characters. I love females like Raven Crosby. Strong, independent, owning her sexuality and making no qualms about it. Here is a woman that's at the top of her career and she keeps striving for more and she doesn't want complications like a relationship to stand in her way. She's all about the hot and quick interludes with men that mean nothing to her the next day. After a hot and heavy office affair just like that, she moves on to greener pastures swearing to herself that she'll never complicate her life by sleeping with someone she works with. She doesn't get hung up on the men or has awkward morning afters, but it's still a complication. Add in her new company's no fraternization rule and a sexy lawyer that tempts her to break every single one of her rules.
A forbidden affair with everything to lose. Two people that can't get enough of each other, rules be damned. And a sizzling plot that ties it all together. Prince Roman was one deliciously satisfying read. Admittedly I totally misread the blurb, because I took the "prince" part literally. *shrugs*. I loved the way everything came together at the end. For a short read, it was still entirely satisfying.

CAUTION...Intensely "Swoon inducing". Take precautions!!!
I must state from the outset that I personally feel that C.D. Reiss is an author whose romantic writing often tips into the realm of important literature. I am a serious "fangirl" and enjoy the layers of meaning, wit and world-building on display in all of her works. This short novella in this "1001 Dark Nights" format is but a brief taste of the mastery that this author owns with language, character development, story telling and oh the many ways she can create that lovely tension upon which the reader of romance gobbles up and begs for more. Yes, even in this a short novella.
Reading this story was like eating a one of a kind uniquely crafted rich creamy dessert... deliciously decadent, silky on the tongue, lovely sugar rush and satisfying. No one ever passes up a delicacy such as this. The experience remembered for a very long time.
We first meet our heroine, Raven beginning her new job. She is determined to leave all the past mistakes she made at her previous employments behind. She wants to keep her work life free from any sexual or relationship entanglements. Yet, on her first day, she meets him, Roman Bianchi. He is startlingly beautiful, he dresses like an alpha male in tailor made clothing over a striking figure of a man. He is a smart lawyer with a commanding presence; and then there are those eyes:
"Green. Brown. Gray. Was that called hazel? Or had this man invented something completely new?"-Raven
The reader is immediately drawn into the internal struggle of Raven's fierce sexual attraction and her resolve not to reveal it in any way or act impulsively on it. The attraction is mutual. Of course this new environment of "forbidden by company policy" creates the "must not touch or go there but my body and heart are screaming to go there" conundrum. Roman, apart from his uncontrollable attraction to Raven, also fancies himself having a hidden agenda in trying to get closer to her. Beyond this, the machinations of the top level of both their managements also create yet another layer of complexity.
Of course as delicious romances go...Raven and Roman do touch...do kiss..do all those other lovely things and in ways that the author keeps fresh, hot, hawt, hot, and so exciting. All the while keeping the reader thoroughly engaged. We fall in love with their love or is it simply "lust"?...as they fall. This heady feeling and ultimately the noble intent and actions of our main characters give the reader a thoroughly satisfying treat.
I could end my review here but I noticed that this read created some questions in my mind buried in the narrative and in the discussion of the project our two main characters were endeavoring to complete. These are good questions, relevant questions, questions answered as a society that would strengthen the fabric of our society for decades forward. I detected no particular political agenda hinted at by some reviewers. The first important question is pay equity between the genders. Paying a just and fair wage to all persons means food on the table, rent paid, family security to the woman who is the family bread winner. Endeavoring to accomplish this quantitatively is a fine and good thing.
The second question has really two parts. The first is not allowing any misogynistic bias or harassment against woman in the workplace by judging their intellect or ability solely on gender. This is a difficult one even in the current culture of Silicon Valley. The second part is distinguishing between genuine affection and respect that is inherent in a true attraction between employees from behaviors that can be misconstrued as "quid pr quo" sexual favors i.e. sexual harassment. Just as pay inequity issues leave a company vulnerable to lawsuit, so do patterns of sexual harassment. One solution is to adopt a zero tolerance fraternization policy. Seems like a simple solution but is this realistic? After all, "the heart wants what it wants."
Discovering the questions and your answers along with the answer to this question found by Raven and Roman is part of all the sexy time and "feels" our author lays out in this wonderfully created tale of a 21st Century Prince among men (or really "boys" to be more accurate).

It's a thrill to read Reiss's heroines. They're smartass, mouthy, confident and bold . They know what they want and go grab it. I loved Raven Crosby. She was in King Of Code , with Taylor Harden. She's a ball buster and is very clear about her goals. Till she joins Neuronet and meets Roman Bianchi. He's a Man of power and powerful men are Raven's thing.
“There’s something about seeing a person doing what they’re good at that’s sexy. Outside work they’re normal. You might not even notice them. But when you see someone where they’re important—needed. Competent. Whatever, add your adjective—it’s pretty hot.”
And boy is he hot ! he's sex on legs and smart as a whip. And their chemistry is explosive and flaming. Obviously company fraternization laws are a bitch and they HAVE to keep their hands to themselves.
“You can’t walk and chew gum at the same time?”
I loved how CD writes her women strong kickass, they look the male counterparts in the eye, grab them by the balls and yet are very soft in the heart.
I love her style of writing, her vantage viewpoint of life and in depth analysis of complex situations
Her literary sense is astounding as usual
Choices aren’t made so clearly by filling in boxes or clicking one button instead of the other. Choices are made over time, little by little while we aren’t looking, until the result is inevitable and the consequences are unavoidable.
I'd love to read some more about this insatiable Roman and sultry Lace clad Raven.
My only upset-it was a small snack that has now whet my appetite and I'm hungry !!!

I love her style of writing, her vantage viewpoint of life and in depth analysis of complex situations

Choices aren’t made so clearly by filling in boxes or clicking one button instead of the other. Choices are made over time, little by little while we aren’t looking, until the result is inevitable and the consequences are unavoidable.
I'd love to read some more about this insatiable Roman and sultry Lace clad Raven.
My only upset-it was a small snack that has now whet my appetite and I'm hungry !!!

This was so good. I love CD writing style. She has a way of creating this perfect visual as she tells the story. Since she has now written two books from my old home, I wonder if she came up here and I missed her.

Raven the lead was awesome. Her character read like a reverse male. She was all woman, but she was bold, smart and driven. And she liked to fu*ck at work. But she was soft on the inside too. I was glad she got her HEA.

I am a big fan of CD Reiss’s writing, and although I may not have loved Prince Roman as much as some of her other work, I still found this novella to be quite enjoyable—a solid 3.5 stars for me.
Raven is a programmer/hacker/gamer geek who accepts a position as VP of Human Resources at a successful company. While she’s perfectly competent, a job in HR seems to be a less than exciting fit for her as far as I’m concerned. However, her main goal in life is to have job security, and she is determined to follow the company’s strict non-fraternization policy. Raven is smart and dedicated, with a secret side of sexy—totally likeable.
Roman is suave and a perfect gentleman, even though he has a little naughtiness mixed in with his romancing. He’s the outside legal counsel hired to find loopholes in the company’s new system implementation. I don’t know if this system has something to do with equality in the company’s employment policy or something computer-related. That part kind of went over my head.
I do know I loved Raven and Roman together—both inside and outside of the bedroom. I enjoyed the progression of their romance and particularly appreciated their professionalism despite their obvious attraction. It’s nice to have an office romance where, for a change, the couple can exercise a little self-control and not continually jump each other’s bones in the supply closet, the break room, a conference room, or an office.
Here’s the main thing that stumped me, though, and perhaps I’m just clueless. If Roman is an external consultant who doesn’t technically work for Raven’s company, would a relationship between the two really be considered fraternization? Surely a lawyer could argue that it’s not, but that would eliminate the basis of the story.
All the same, I’m amazed that this novella gives the reader so much bang for their buck. It’s a mature and entertaining romance with highly appealing characters. Prince Roman is a standalone that continues Raven’s story from King of Code. I haven’t read the previous book, but I definitely will because I’d love to learn more about Raven.

Man, I love these little novellas! I just wish they were LONGER.
Prince Roman was so freaking good. In it, you will meet Raven and Roman. They are coworkers which led to some fun forbidden romance. Of course these two had insta-everything: attraction, lust, love, etc. Now even though I hate all that jazz - novellas make me love it. Which I totally get is weird and confusing but it somehow works for me.
When things needed to be hot - they sizzled and I loved all of it. The drama was kind of meh but it usually is for me. Still enjoyed the crap out of this but again, just wished it was longer. Can I just get one giant dark night book?

This is a 1001 Dark Nights story from CD Reiss and I guess this could be summed up as being an office romance - a very sexy one though....
Raven has just started a new job, a job she is very excited about. She has one rule for herself though, don't sleep with anyone she works with. Too bad that she meets a hottie on her first day then....
'He was proof of unfairness in the world. No one should get to look like that. I'd met good-looking men before, but when he looked at me over our clasped hands and said 'Nice to meet you,' I forgot what I was supposed to say in response.'
Raven battles with her inner thoughts and desires each day that she sees Roman at work. These two dance around each other, despite this insane attraction between them. There is a non-fraternization policy that neither of them wish to break but it's getting hard. Really. Hard.
Then, they cross that line and OMG it is more incredible that either of them could ever imagine. So begins the keeping it under wraps / sneaking around game between them. It just seems so unfair that she has found someone as amazing as Roman but both of their much loved jobs are on the line if they are found out.

A Sassy Little Office Romance.......a stand-alone novella that felt every bit like a full book. It was a perfect blend of cat and mouse and hot and sexy. CD Reiss continues her savviness of the tech world by bringing Raven Crosby from King of Code to a new company where she meets Roman Bianchi, outside counsel to the new company.
These two meet and it’s on. There is a no fraternization policy in place but these two have an undeniable chemistry. And when they do cross those lines, it’s definitely combustible. They are both two strong people who go after what they want. Raven is independent, fiery, passionate and sexy. Roman is suave, snarky, protective and completely swoon worthy. Can their “Underground Fraternization” keep them “Gaming” or will it cause their relationship to be “Pwned”?
If you’re looking for a quick read that is just a breathe of fresh air, Prince Roman is perfect. And just you wait and see what he does to earn that title of “Prince”.........Roman Bianchi is a definite Prince of a Man!!

Raven is a top-notch technology guru and leaves her prestigious job to start over, make a name for herself, and NOT get involved with hot behind the door activities with any coworkers!! Meeting Roman though, of course, leaves her no fraternitizing rule up in the air...can she refrain?
Roman is just as interested in Raven as she is into him (although she hides it better!). When she offers him a one night of no holds barred activities, Roman knows two things: he really shouldn't being they work together, but he'd be straight up moronic to NOT take her up on this offer!!
This novella was nothing short of volcanic hot. The two were dynamic characters in and out of the bedroom. Strong at their job, brilliant, and sexy, both these characters made you fall in love with them from the beginning...and WANT for them to work out!! This is one of my first 1001 Dark Nights reads but I'm ready to jump right into another one if all are this good!

GAH!!! I’m so incredibly selfish when it comes to this author! I want ALL THINGS CD Reiss…ALL THE FREAKING TIME! No matter the genre, she KILLS the game each and every time! With PRINCE ROMAN, her latest standalone novella that takes place in her KING OF CODE World, we get a taste of the lighter, more romantic side of Ms. Reiss, but it’s no less captivating and smart as her other romances, that’s for sure.
If you’ve read KING OF CODE, you might find our heroine in PRINCE ROMAN a little familiar. Raven Crosby is smart, driven, beautiful, and independent. She tells it like it is, no matter what and man, do I envy that of her. She is starting a new job and her main goal…do NOT make the same mistakes again. No more sexy office romps are in her future. Then enters Roman Bianchi, who happens to be occupying the office across the way from her. He’s sinfully gorgeous and he can keep up with Raven, as well as, keeps her on her toes. This is one hell of a pairing and the banter that consumes the pages is HOT, HILARIOUS, and WITTY! I loved every single second of it!
If you are brand spankin’ new to this incredible world, you are in for a TREAT! You are going to FALL HARD for these characters, I guarantee it! This woman is just amazing. She hits the mark every single time. The whole IT (or whatever word you want to use) was completely lost on me, but it didn’t matter because Raven and Roman were so damn likeable, and sexy, and humorous, and just everything. I read this little gem in just a few hours, and it was the best few hours of my day. My heart was happy and I smiled the entire time!

CD Reiss never disappoints. This sexy, quick and dirty story had me lusting for more. I can never get enough of her words. Roman and Raven ignited the pages with their off the charts chemistry and hotter than hell scenes. Seriously. I wanted to be bent over Roman's desk. *bites fist* I really couldn't get enough. Loved it!

Would You Know When You Met Your "One"?
Well, for those of us who have found it, it does feel kinda instantaneous. But it's really a series of small little decisions your mind and heart make in unison that gives you the push to put that "one" person in your life's future. These little decisions are based on big and not so big data collected along the way. You know the basics: smexy times awesome. Check. cleanliness (a must). Check. like to laugh (with you, not at you or anyone else for that matter). Check . are they kind, thoughtfull, honest, steadfast, noble....can you respect them in the morning...you get where I'm going! All this data dump, quick little decisions made to quantify if your "one" is gonna be IT. This is the true thrill of a new romance, IMHO.
If you've never read C. D. Reiss before, you won't know that she is the Queen of putting her MCs in each other's sights and BAM...their brains and hearts start data collecting! Sometimes they prowl around each other. Sometimes they push away, far, far away because they just know in that instant life is about to change. The other thing you won't know until you read your first CDR is her MCs rarely have cookie-cutter, two dimensional lives or backgrounds. They are interesting, intelligent, and equally matched in flaws and determination.
Okay, fan girl here got that outta the way!
These things were just rolling around in my reading head, because Raven and Roman's story, while well written and very much a CDR work, was just a little different. Just a little "more."
What! Why? Well. Maybe because I knew a little bit about Raven, who I thought was sharp and classy from King of Code, Taylor and Harper's story. Maybe its because its a little shorter? Maybe because the obstacle (still IS a meaningfull one) was not as angsty as many of CDR's typical darker hurdles?
Well, maybe....hmmmm.
I got it! Romance. The romance was so very romantic-er. Almost chivalrous! Thank you, dear author, for keeping things fresh and exciting. And skillfully writing a new way to show how to recognize when you've found the "one," and what you'd give up to have a chance at a new future together.
4.5* stars (because it needed at least 4 more chapters of epilogues LOL)

Prince Roman by CD Reiss is everything you want in a sexy novella. Raven and Roman's attraction to each other is off the charts and staying away from each other outside of the workplace is not an option. No matter how professional they appear at work, they live for the weekends, and the day that they are no longer working together. Roman's contract expires in three weeks. Unexpectedly, Roman's contract is renewed and now Raven's job is in jeopardy. Does Roman choose the brass ring of reaching partner, his ultimate goal, or is Raven more important to him than a title.
I really enjoyed Prince Roman and I know you will too.

Another great, shorter story in the Silicon Valley series. I hadn't realised I had it in my kindle until I started Prince Charming. This author never fails to deliver fantastic stories. One on my favourite authors

Prince Roman is the newest work from author C.D. Reiss and is novella number 19 in the 2017 1,001 Dark Nights lineup. I always know I can count on Ms. Reiss for a sexy, fun, flirty story with a kick ass heroine and boy, oh, boy this was no exception.
As in the real world, workplace romance can be very very tricky. Never has this been more true than in the situation we find Raven and Roman. You see, Raven is the woman in charge and Roman works for her. That, I must say, was the aspect I most enjoyed. I love a strong female lead and think it is so damn important in this day and age, especially. She was a boss both inside the boardroom and in the bedroom, being unabashed when it came to saying exactly what she desired. But I also loved Roman in that he could let Raven take the lead but also assert his own delicious brand of alpha dominance. Yummy with a capital "Y"!
These two were off the charts smoking hot and I couldn't get enough of them. Adding to their insanely scorching chemistry is the internal struggle they both go through when they start to realize what was supposed to be a casual, secret fling is turning into much more and the possible ramifications of what that could mean for both of their careers. I don't want to ruin even one second of their journey for you, so you have to trust me when I say: pick up this book!

OMG!! This book was bloody brilliant. It had everything I love from a CD Reiss book. Amazing writing, an addictive story and smokin' hot sex. CD Reiss really is one of the best authors in this genre. The sex scenes along with her spellbinding words make a phenomenal combination that is truly unique. I really can't think of another author that can create such a masterpiece in the erotic book world.

This quick read is an office romance between the insanely hot Roman and his co-worker, Raven. It's not just the usual office romance though. With CD Reiss at the helm, it adds an extra bit of fiery passion and excitement. Every step of the way I felt my heart rate quicken as things heated up between the two main characters. By the last part of the book, I was certain that my heart was going to beat out of my chest and land on the table in front of me. It was that thrilling!!

I adored the characters in this story, Raven was a work driven girl who was determined not to let a man stand in the way of her career. Roman was utterly gorgeous. I fell in love with him very quickly, addicted to his sexy alpha ways and the way he treated Raven. CD Reiss has created yet another book boyfriend that I found completely irresistible.

I absolutely loved "Prince Roman" almost reading it in one sitting. Roman and Raven's story was a deliciously sexy read that I didn't want to end. I highly recommend picking this one up on release day.

This quick read is an office romance between the insanely hot Roman and his co-worker, Raven. It's not just the usual office romance though. With CD Reiss at the helm, it adds an extra bit of fiery passion and excitement. Every step of the way I felt my heart rate quicken as things heated up between the two main characters. By the last part of the book, I was certain that my heart was going to beat out of my chest and land on the table in front of me. It was that thrilling!!

I adored the characters in this story, Raven was a work driven girl who was determined not to let a man stand in the way of her career. Roman was utterly gorgeous. I fell in love with him very quickly, addicted to his sexy alpha ways and the way he treated Raven. CD Reiss has created yet another book boyfriend that I found completely irresistible.
"You are my ambition. You are my mountain to climb. You're my only aspiration."
I absolutely loved "Prince Roman" almost reading it in one sitting. Roman and Raven's story was a deliciously sexy read that I didn't want to end. I highly recommend picking this one up on release day.

Smart, sexy and fast-paced, Prince Roman, will reel you in and spit you out, all in one sitting. I'm not complaining, of course. I had the perfect excuse to do zero adulting and let me warn you...once you start this story, you won't be able to stop until you're panting from the exertion.

Prince Roman is a sexy little standalone novella from CD Reiss' Court of Silicon Valley series. It's a perfect, flirty, fun office romance that manages to deal with a very real issue - how to find love when your life is your work and your coworkers are all off limits. That's Raven's life in a nutshell. She's single, smart, and beautiful - a veritable unicorn in the hothouse world of coders, dude bros and venture capitalists. We catch up with Raven, the HR exec from QI4 and Taylor Harden's sometimes fling when she makes a jump to Neuronet - choosing the stability of a career with the Silicon Valley behemoth with the strictest non-fraternization policy in the industry. It's all part of her plan to keep temptation out of her path.
That plan doesn't even make it through Raven's first day on the job when her first assignment puts her in the path of Roman Bianchi, a legal consultant who's all sex and savvy wrapped in a Brioni suit. Sparks fly immediately and temperatures soar as they attempt to put a lid on their growing mutual attraction. But Palo Alto is a small town and their past continually cross until one night Raven comes up with a bright idea - a single night together so they can get each other out of their systems. One and Done.Roman jumps at the chance with the secret hope of it becoming something more. Of course, one night turns into weekend turns into a relationship on the DL.
Despite this being a novella, the main characters are beautifully, fully fleshed out. Roman is a lawyer/gamer/mountaineer who, in his heart of hearts, is a vulnerable white knight and Raven's a seemingly brittle career girl who's really soft and pliable and looking for the stability that her chaotic upbringing has taught her to equate with love. Only she's looking in all the wrong places and willing to sacrifice just about everything for it. As a reader you fall hard for this couple quickly. They can't keep their hands off of each other and the sex is salacious and sweet all at once. Even the obligatory quickie in a highly inappropriate place is new and fresh thanks to Ms. Reiss' deft characterization and bright, snappy writing.
Ms. Reiss is firing on all cylinders with Prince Roman. Her prose is sparkling and the emotional tension between her character practically leaps off the page. I find myself wishing that the book was longer because I relish every moment I spend in CD Reiss' California, but, honestly, the book was a perfect length because we fall as fast and hard for Roman and Raven as they do for each other with the extra added bonus of some shockingly brilliant advice for the lovelorn from none other than Taylor Harden. That alone is worth the price of this book. Five stars

Christine (C.D.) Reiss is a maestra of story telling. I love how she delves into the subject matter. You can tell she does her research because there are times I have no idea what's going on because all of the language or most of it goes over my head. But I have to give her props for it and do some research of my own so I can figure out what was said and what it meant. Christine has this way of meshing fiction and reality that's blends the lines. I know I'm reading something not real, but her research and effort for detail is such that it elevates the story to an entirely new level.
So why am I still giving this book such a high rating if parts of it went over my head? Well the confusing part was brief and towards the beginning of the book and it was all technical jargon regarding what Roman Bianchi did for a living, but the story itself was fascinating and scintillating. Raven was such a fascinating character. She had a brief appearance in King of Code and I was eager to read more about her. I mean women in tech are not very common. And Raven is an even rarer oddity with having left her job on good terms even though she had a fling with her boss. I really admired Raven for that and wanting more stability in a field where it was almost non-existent.
I could feel Raven and Roman's attraction to one another, and I could see them fighting it too. I understood the high stakes for Raven from the very beginning, but for Roman it didn't become clear until almost the end of the story. And by then it was truly a dilemma for them, especially in regards for how the felt for one another and their careers.
For a story of just 120 pages, it's surprisingly complete, but I can't help wanting to know more. What happens to Raven and Roman after the end of the book? Where do they go from there? However I feel that way with most of Christine's books, so that's not a new phenomena for me. I also don't want to give too much away, but the scene at the opera is so hot, I feel like I may have burned a whole in my underwear. Sorry if it's TMI. Really it's Raven and Roman and the pull between them that drives everything in this book.
I must also give Christine props for bringing attention to issues many people are facing in the workplace, especially since that's where a majority of their time is being spent and then dealing with the inner working and politics of offices like no-fraternization rules, etc. I may have read this story quickly, but I have a feeling it will stay with me for a long time. I can't wait to see what Christine writes next!

Short stories are tough. You have to pack a lot into a short amount of space and still tell a story that is interesting and engages the reader. I tend to be very picky about the ones I will read as i find a lot of them fall short. The 1001 Dark Nights series of books, however, are quickly becoming favorites of mine as they tend to be well-written and excellent shorter stories.
CD Reiss is an expert at telling a story. A duet, a standalone, a shorter story...all of them are crafted so perfectly that you don't feel that you missed out no matter the length. Ok, I admit, I wanted more of Roman and Raven. But, not because I felt that there wasn't enough in the story, rather because I liked him so much at the end, I want more of his story. I want to know what he is like when he is doing the things he loves, not the things he likes (more here would be a spoiler, this will all make sense) and to see him really get the chance to be in his element, and not part of a team assisting in another company.
I also want to know Raven better than I did from the book. I am so fascinated by a woman who seems to see her own caring nature, her willingness to seek and find a connection with others, as a flaw. It's not, but in the world where she lives and works, she sees it as a liability...it's the reason she moves to another position, and the reason she is afraid of what she feels building with Roman. Sometimes, the security you think you are looking for is in a different place than you thought, and her journey to this realization is so interesting.
The world of the gamer, the code, the people who work with computers and speak their language is so interesting. It feels different and I think it is the attention to detail of the author at work here more than anything. She does the story, and the characters, justice by understanding them and their world...and she uses this understanding to bring a reader (like me) a little more into a world I know nothing about, and to make the people in it human and accessible.
The plot is tightly crafted and there is nothing extra to pull you from the main story. You are engaged from the beginning, there is an attraction you can feel between Roman and Raven, and you want to know what is going to happen next. The combination of the plot, the game/coding world and the characters make this work so perfectly the length doesn't matter as you are engaged in the story as it unfolds.
I have to make sure I have a block of time to sit and read anything by Ms. Reiss as I know I am going to get so drawn in by the story, and her words (wow can she write sentences that make you stop and read them again) and be upset if life gets in the way and I have to put the book down before it is finished.

Raven was introduced in King of Code when she was hooking-up with Taylor, although not a serious relationship the alteration to their status with Taylor and Harper now together has made Raven look for alternative, stable employment.
All Raven has ever wanted was to make sure she was secure in her employment and stable financially after growing up with artistic free-spirited parents who often forgot the mundane necessities of life like food. Embarking on a new career, Raven is determined to make the most of her new opportunity. That is until she crosses paths with the charismatic Roman Bianchi. Although Roman is only a contractor for the company the iron-clad non-fraternisation policy provides a barrier to exploring the attraction between them.
Roman has his own issues with relationships stemming from his career goals but he has reached a point in his life where he is looking for something more than just a hook-up. All alpha male Raven doesn't really stand a chance when Roman sets his sights on her.
